Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the only ways to make legit money on the internet, at least for the average person. Legit meaning that you actually make money, and you have to actually work.

The basic, watered down definition of affiliate marketing is the act of promoting other people’s products through website/blog content, e-mail lists (not spam), and/or social media through something called an affiliate link.

Having a website is critical to success; the e-mail lists and social media are important but you will most likely be unsuccessful relying on just those two things.

You need to be able to convince someone to click on your link and buy from something from the link. You will probably not be able to do that on social media alone.

It is not a good idea to make a sales website with a bunch of ads and affiliate links.

The more successful affiliate marketers don’t try to trick people with sales techniques. They find a niche, which is usually a problem that a specific demographic is having, or a hobby, and than they try to help that particular group find products that can help them solve a problem.

For example, parents and kids are a very popular niche. But you shouldn’t be that broad, or else you will run into A LOT of competition. You should narrow it down to something like a particular line of toys or a home remedies for illnesses that regularly affect children. I know of someone that ran a successful campaign on children’s tablets. There is just a ton of products out there that you can promote.

Promoting products through affiliate links are usually a combination of product reviews, research, quality website content, social media, search engines and more advanced techniques and programs such as Google adwords and other search engine PPC programs.

It is also important that you don’t promote everything as if its the best thing since sliced bread (I have actually never been able to figure out what is so great about sliced bread, but I am sure you get the idea). You will lose trust that way. Write honest reviews and keep in mind that you are trying to help people. Once you get up and going you should get sales on negative reviews as well!

Anyways, I don’t want to digress to much. Their will be plenty of training and information on this site in the near future. For now, I hope I gave you a good general view of how affiliate marketing works. Now its on to the good stuff…

The following are some of the benefits of affiliate marketing:

1. Working from your own home at your own pace.

2. You are answerable only to yourself, except for maybe a private affiliate program here and there with an aggressive affiliate manager; however, this is very rare, in fact in most cases you will be hard pressed to get communication from them at all.

Dangerous roads
Does this look familiar?

3. Freedom and independence, no more stressing out when you get stuck at an airport or the weather is really bad, or whatever the case may be.

4. Low cost for starting the business. Think of all the people who invest thousands to open up a store or a franchise, and a lot of the time they don’t see a profit for years (or never). It is not usually free to run a successful affiliate marketing campaign, but it is MUCH cheaper than most of entrepreneur-ships.

These are the main reasons why I decided to become and affiliate marketer. The reasons may be different for you, but I am going to assume that it is better than the 9-5 routine for most people. If the amount of people that complain about their job and their boss is any indication.

There are some cons associated with affiliate marketing. Well, they not really cons for people who have been successful, but they are obstacles that beginners run into:

1. It can be associated with the stigma that a promise of an online income is a scam.

2. Many times, people choose their niche for the wrong reasons, and their content reflects that.

3. Some people try to run a website and a successful online business without ever spending any money, therefore they don’t even have basic things such as their own domain name, good hosting, as well as support and training. Affiliate marketing is not really for anyone that is in a dire financial situation and they need money right away, because desperation will also reflect in your writing and your content.

As I said before, the cost of starting an online affiliate marketing business is much cheaper than almost any other kind of business.

Of course, everyone has their own perspective, but these are some of the objections and challenges that are common for beginners.

The only way to fail is to give up

Quitting is really the only way to fail. You can’t fire yourself; there are times when an affiliate program may drop you, but there is always another one you can use.

These are a few common reasons why people quit (this is my last list I promise!)

1.They chose their market or their niche because they thought it would be the most profitable and/or because they thought it was the easiest.

This is a bad way to go about choosing your niche. All niches have the potential to be successful, as long as there is a product or a service to sell over the internet; so it makes sense to choose a niche that you are passionate about.

I made this very same mistake when I first started with affiliate marketing. You can believe me when i say that it sucks to invest time in making a website (as well as the cost of a domain name) only to realize one day that you have no more content to offer.

Save yourself the trouble and find something that you know about, are interested in, or something that you want to learn about.

2. Loss of confidence

It is easy to lose confidence on this journey; there will be many ups and downs. If you hang in there, things will get better.

If you are stuck on a problem, go work on something else and come back to it later. There are always plenty of things to do.

3. I didn’t realize that it would be so much work!

Working online has the unfortunate stereotype of being quick and easy.

That is one of the many consequences that the scammers have inflicted on us.

I am here to tell you that working online independently is very difficult and time consuming, but the rewards are well worth it.

4. Distractions

Distractions are usually a slow kill deal. They are constantly pulling you away from your depressed (1)

Distractions can some in many forms. If you are easily distracted, than you probably don’t have much interest in what you are doing. It may be time to shake things up a little bit, such as choosing a new niche or taking your site to a new direction.

Of course, some distractions are pertinent, such as family, health issues, and your current source of income. I am referring to video games and Facebook and stuff like that.

5. Writer’s block

Writer’s block happens to everyone. Don’t make it a bigger problem then it has to be by blankjust starring at a blank screen.

Try taking a nap or getting some exercise. Fix other issues with your site or add some images and some eye candy.
